Mission

The FÓSFORO FOUNDATION serves to support the local Mexican communities surrounding Puebla by providing meaningful employment opportunities, improving local resources and driving gender equality.

Long before we sold our first case of mezcal, we started working on creating the Fósforo Foundation—recognizing that success meant so much more than what was in the bottle.

As Lisa and Jim began to think about the impact that they would have (both positive and negative), in creating a new mezcal brand, the conversation always centered around the community and the people that have defined mezcal culture in Puebla.

We knew that there was an opportunity to make a difference, but we also knew that we needed to remain thoughtful and respectful about our role.

The FÓSFORO FOUNDATION has engaged a leading Poblano social scientists—Humberto Piñón & Violeta Coronado—to study the ecological and social impact that the Fósforo Mezcal brand will have on the local community.

Under Humberto’s and Violeta’s guidance, we will partner closely with the local and state governments to invest in the future of the local communities by employing local workers in targeted projects.

One of our first projects is replanting trees that are often over-utilized in the Mezcal production process. We are partnering with the local community to strategically plant trees that will provide a fruitful resource for all in the future.

The first of what we hope will be many projects in the region, our goal is to help protect local resources through the replanting process, while also providing meaningful employment opportunities and income.
